In Texas Flood Tragedy, a five-year-old boy drowned in floodwaters and a woman got injured. This marks the first death after the storm, prompting authorities to declare a disaster in more than three-quarters of the states countries. Over 2.1 million people, including those in the Houston area, were under flood watch.
According to Jamie Moore, the emergency management coordinator for Johnson County, officials responded to a call about a vehicle stuck in rapidly rising waters overnight, leading to the discovery of the deceased boy. Three others survived but were washed away when they attempted to reach safety after the authorities’ response.
Rivers in southern Texas are overflowing following days of rain, flooding homes and businesses and forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. At least 224 people were rescued from Harris County homes and cars, evacuation orders were given, and flood monitoring is still in place because heavy rain is predicted for the weekend, according to a county official. In particular, Houston is underwater.
153 pets were also rescued during the flood, according to Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who also noted that there had been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries in her area.
“Determining where the river ends is difficult,” Lieutenant David Jasper remarked.
Teller said, “We have rescue vehicles that can go high water. Jet skis are available to us. We own airboats. It’s really a coordinated effort to ensure the safety of Houstonians, as we have dump trucks from our Houston Public Works Department that can be mobilized to carry people through that high water.”
According to National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Stalley, the storm brought six to eight inches of rain in a span of six to eight hours from Central Texas to the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
The final round of the 2024 Insperity Invitational, a PGA Tour Champions event, which was supposed to take place in Houston at the end of this week, has been canceled due to the storm and flooding, according to the PGA Tour Champions Rules Committee.
At George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport, Houston’s two main airports, hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed during the storm.
By Tuesday, there could be some rain. At 7 p.m., the Houston National Weather Service Office announced, “Flood monitoring has finally ended after 93 hours of flooding.”
“Moderate to major flooding in rivers will be a concern for several days to a week,” the office declared.
Since April 1st, the state has experienced a string of severe weather events affecting the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast. River levels have not been seen since Hurricane Harvey’s devastating flooding in 2017, dozens of tornadoes have made landfall, some areas have seen softball-sized hail, and eastern Texas has been hit by heavy rains for months.
