Ganga Saptami is a day dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is also known as Ganga Pujan and Ganga Jayanti, which marks the rebirth of Ganga on this auspicious day . According to Drik Panchang, this year the festival of Ganga Saptami will be celebrated on 14th May. Ganga Saptami Madhyahna Muhurta is from 10:56 am to 1:39 pm on 14th May. Saptami Tithi starts – May 14, 2024 at 02:50 PM, Saptami Tithi ends – May 15, 2024 at 04:19 PM.
Importance Of Ganga Saptami:
The significance of Ganga Saptami lies in the belief that on this day, Goddess Ganga took her rebirth on earth. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva had them locked in his hair so that their powerful stream would not destroy everything. Another Purana says that the ashram of sage Jahnu was washed away by the powerful wave of Ganga. Angered, he drank her water but later on the insistence of Lord Shiva he freed her. Therefore, Ganga is also known as Rishi Jahnu.
Holy bath in Ganga:
Devotees wake up early in the morning and take a bath in the holy Ganges. This action is considered to have religious significance in purifying the body and soul . Then they light a lamp and carry it decorated in the river. They also offer garlands and sweets to Goddess Ganga. In the evening, Aarti of Goddess Ganga is performed. People donate lamps to Goddess Ganga in the evening – this ritual is known as Deep Daan.
