Understanding the Shift: Implications of Karnataka Government Decision to Scrap Four-Year Graduation Program
Four-Year Graduation Dismissed: The four-year graduation scheme is not going to happen. As before, students must now enroll in three-year undergraduate courses toward a bachelor’s degree. Karnataka government has taken this very important decision.

A significant state has rejected the introduction of four-year graduation programs in its universities and colleges, just prior to the CUET exam 2024.
Impact on Higher Education Landscape: Karnataka’s Move to Revoke Four-Year Graduation
Exams for UGCUET 2024 are about to start. Prior to that, the government of Karnataka issued an order declaring, “We will not allow 4-year degree programs to be offered in any of our government universities or affiliated government colleges.” The only degree programs available to students in the academic year 2024–2025 will be 3-year programs.
In its interim report, a committee led by former UGC chairman Sukhadeo Thorat explained that the goal of altering the length and structure of degree programs is to give students from different economic classes, women, and rural areas equal opportunities.
As stated by the commission, “Rural areas and women, as well as scheduled castes and tribes, the poor, and women’s access to undergraduate education will likely be reduced by the four-year degree program.”
Affected colleges and all public universities will experience the changes.
Implications of Karnataka’s Shift to Three-Year Bachelor’s Degrees
The government has said it will decide after receiving its final report in August whether the recommendations regarding multiple entry and exit rules for obtaining degrees and diplomas should be implemented. This has caused a great deal of debate among interested parties.
